드러머를 떠나 보내며:

난 컨셉 앨범을 별로 안 좋아한다. 정확하게 말하자면, 앨범의 스토리를 정하고 그 컨셉에 맞추려고 곡들을 강제로 변경하는 것을 안 좋아한다. Escapism, One Can Demand an Acknowledgement, 그리고 STD Album도 그런 맥락이였다. 그러나, 재밌게도 작업물들을 모아보면 처음 의도와는 다르게 컨셉이 정해지는 경우가 있는데, 이번 앨범 The Early KRP Cookbook이 이런 케이스로 볼 수 있겠다.

사실 최근까지도 이 앨범을 꼭 5곡으로 정해야하는지도 의문이였다. 처음 미니 앨범엔 6곡, 다음은 4곡이였으니 이번엔 5곡이여야한다라는 강박증을 탈피하고 싶었던 의도로 시간을 뒀었지만, 결국은 5곡으로 정해졌으며, 제목은 아나키스트의 요리책의 미숙한 위험성을 패러디하면서 Gilla Band (전 Girl Band)의 초심 아닌 초심을 보여주는 The Early Years를 합하여 The Early KRP Cookbook가 나왔다. 그러면서, 이 다섯 곡들을 어떻게 표현할까 고민을 했었다.

다섯 곡…다섯 개의 소리…다섯 개의 요리…다섯 개의 맛. 
그래. 오미자다.

이렇게 “들리는 오미자차”가 이번 앨범의 컨셉으로 결정이 됐으며, 또한 각각의 곡들은 색다른 맛들로 정의할 수 있을만큼 강렬하다. 

(It Takes Time To Create) Magnum Opus : 매운 맛

파워 일렉트로닉스 노래를 오마주한 곡들은 많지만, 각을 잡고 아예 그 장르 곡을 만들자는 결심을 한건, 음악 커뮤니티를 돌아다니다가 귀에 꽂히는 샘플을 들었을 때였다. 듣자마자 주술을 외우는듯한 느낌을 받고, 약 2분뒤에 바로 곡 제목이 나온걸로 기억한다. 샘플링해도 되냐고 채팅으로 물어보니 다행히도 좋게 말씀해주셔서, 이 글을 빌려 감사의 말씀을 드립니다.

Daydreamed : 짠 맛

비트 해프닝같이 엄청 원시적인 음악 스타일에서 영감을 받았다. 아무래도 지하철들을 많이 타다보니 지하철과 관련된 노래들이 많이 나오는듯하는데, 이런 느낌에선 오히려 기타를 표방하지만 기타같지 않은 소리가 어울리는 듯한다. 처음엔 Daydreaming으로 제목을 지으려다 라디오헤드 동명의 노래도 있고 과거형을 붙이면 잡 생각을 하다가 현실로 돌아오는 느낌이 곡와도 와닿아 Daydreamed로 수정했다. 참고로 가사에서 케찹이 짠지 단지 스티커를 붙여달라는 가사는 실화 기반이다. 난 달다고 붙였는데, 대체 왜 이런 설문조사를 했을까.


Tipsy : 신 맛

도플러 이펙트에서 영감을 받아 만든 비트에 신스 샘플을 얹다가, 이 앨범을 위해 밴드다운 편곡을 했다. 원래 KRP 스타일에 맞지 않은 음악이라 생각했었다. 그러나, 후술에도 얘기하겠지만 밴드의 드럼 포지션에 꼭 어쿠스틱 드럼만 넣어야하나라는 생각이 들면서 다시 “밴드” 편곡으로 만들어낸 곡이다.

Dooomed : 단 맛

간단하게 말 하자면 노 웨이브의 케이팝 버전. 칸의 Sing Swan Song 같이 물흐르는 소리로 시작해 달콤한 피아노가 반복되지만, 오미자차에서의 단 맛은 잠깐만 있을뿐이다.

빈 정상 (Empty Apex) : 쓴 맛

윌코의 Dash 7, 더 벨벳 언더그라운드의 After Hours, 그리고 마이 모닝 자켓의 Bermuda Highway 처럼 밴드 음악같지 않으면서 혼자선 연주하는건 아닌 잔잔한 어쿠스틱 매스락 발라드다. 가끔 밴드음악을 들으면 전체 멤버들이 연주하지 않는 곡들이 나오는데, 과연 그 곡으로도 전체 밴드 멤버들은 개런티를 똑같이 나눠서 받을까라는 생각을 한다.

KRP 1집까지 내가 생각했던 소리는 “5인 밴드다운거” 였었다: 리듬 기타리스트면서 보컬인 나, 리드 기타, 베이스, 키보드, 그리고 드럼. 그러나, 시간이 지나면서 꼭 다섯명의 나에게 편곡을 하는 것에 지치면서 경제적인 사항도 고려해, DJ처럼 키보드와 드럼 포지션을 겹치기로 결정했다. 드럼이 미디/샘플로 나오면 가짜여서 싫다고? 그럼 힙합/일렉트로닉에서 나오는 샘플 비트는 가짜인가? 

이 생각이 들면서 난 그냥 미디 드럼/샘플로 대체하며 드러머 포지션은 KRP에서 내쫓기로 했다. 어려운 결정이였다.




Farewell To The Drummer:

I’m not a big fan of concept albums. To be more specific, I don’t like to decide the story of an album and manipulate the orders and structures of the songs just to fit in. Escapism, One Can Demand an Acknowledgement, and STD Album were created in this manner. However, there’s an occasion when the concept gets created as you collect the works, and you can say The Early KRP Cookbook fits into this case.

Until very recently, I was unsure if I had to make this album into five songs. I didn’t want to adapt an obsession of putting five songs merely because the previous mini albums had six or four songs. So, I gave some time to see if I could fill in more songs into an album, but I decided to put five songs at the end. The title, The Early KRP Cookbook, is a parody of the immature danger of The Anarchist Cookbook and Gilla band’s The Early Years (which were not from their actual early years). Then, I considered the way to describe the five songs in this album.

Five songs… Five sounds… Five dishes… Five Flavors…
Bingo. The magnolia berry tea (a.k.a. five-flavor tea).

And that is how the “sonification of magnolia berry tea” was chosen as the album’s concept, and the songs were powerful enough to identify each song with specific flavors.

(It Takes Time To Create) Magnum Opus : Spicy

KRP has several songs homaging the Power Electronics music. However, when I coincidentally found an ear-catching sample in the music community site, that was the moment that I decided to actually create the power electronics music. As soon as I heard it, the sample felt like performing an enchantment, and after around 2 minutes, the title of this song suddenly popped up in my head. I would like to personally thank the creator of this sample for being generous in using the sound after communicating through the chat.

Daydreamed : Salty

This song is inspired by the overly primitive music style of Beat Happening. It seems like there are numerous songs inspired by the metros since I take them a lot, and I figured out that a guitar-ish sound fitted better to this kind of song. I initially tried to name it as Daydreaming, but since that was already named by Radiohead and by putting a past structure to imply the character in the song came back to reality after daydreaming, I changed the name to Daydreamed. FYI, the part of the lyrics about putting a sticker on whether a ketchup is sweet or salty is actually based on a real event. I put it on sweet, but god knows why this survey happened in the first place.

Tipsy : Sour

This song’s beat is inspired by the doppler effect, and I arranged to make it as a “band song”. I had thought this song didn’t fit into the KRP category. But, as I will state about this later in this liner note, after I considered if the drummer position of the band only has to use an acoustic drum sound, I started to re-work on this song and arranged it to fit in as a KRP song.


Dooomed : Sweet

To simply put, this is a K-pop version of the No Wave genre. Starting from the water flowing sound like Can’s Sing Swan Song, the song repeats the sweet piano chord. However, the sweetness of magnolia berry tea is only momentary.

빈 정상 (Empty Apex) : Bitter

Inspired by Wilco’s Dash 7, The Velvet Underground’s After Hours, and My Morning Jacket’s Bermuda Highway, this acoustic math rock ballad doesn’t sound like a band sound, but it also doesn’t feel empty like a solo-performed song neither. Sometimes songs which don’t feel like the whole band members participated come out as I hear band music, and I’m curious if that song’s guarantee is also equally provided to each member.


My original plan until KRP’s 1st LP was to sound like a “five-piece band”: Me (rhythm guitarist), lead guitar, bass, keyboard, and drum. Nonetheless, as time passed, I started to get tired of arranging the whole music for five positions, and additionally considering the economic factor, I decided to overlap the keyboard and drum position like a DJ. Some might say they hate the artificial sounding drum from the midi or sample. However, I would like to refute by saying this: is the sampled beat from hip-hop/electronic music fake?

I considered about this factor, and I decided to replace the drummer position by a midi drum and sample. It was a hard decision.
